Budget Horn Deadening

but that stuff is far from the what is typically available in spray cans for automotive use. Going to the parts store and grabbing the "average" can of undercoating will likely result in a mess

As I said before if you know what you are doing !!! And what to look for, this should not be a problem.Where in my posts did I say grab the average can ? I said don't look for the cheapest stuff you can find otherwise your results will already be predetermined !

It's beyond me how you guys can argue about my Horns that I own ! Without ever seeing them in person to look at,touch,examine,for yourself.The 5 are all Original Altec 511 E's with legit serials,I'm not so sure about the last one.Best guess would be modded for the last one.

I think Bill can answer this question better than I.

How about just using acrylic roof or foundation coatings? Either apply mutiple coats or maybe just pour and fill up the entire backside of the bell? I would try filling up some other test part first to see how much it might shrink or not dry. I thought of using two part poly urethane to fill up the bell, but at $100+ per gallon, I guess not.

Oh you're right, it MUST be undercoating out of a spray can because those are the only two substances like that on earth.

Where in my posts did I say grab the average can ?

Go and re-read your original statement about going to the local autoparts store.......... everything is written in generalities, which suggests the average guy can go to the average autoparts store and pick a "couple of cans" of the average undercoating. Then as proof that it will work you offer pictures of your factory Altec horns done in anything but your average undercoating.

I'd be leery of using something that's intended for exterior use on a horn that would be kept inside. The regular tar/oil/aspahlt type stuff that I used on my foundation permeated the basement wall and outgased INSIDE for a few days. I've never used any of the acrylic products.

I've wondered if the hot tar used on flat roofs would work for filling a horn every time I see a contractor pulling one of the hot smelly trailers to a job.

Nope. Asphalt is unstable like glass in that it never becomes a solid so it can creep around on you when you least expect it. It will also shrink and crack over time as the solvents continue to outgas and will be smelly the whole time. You have to coat it to prevent the UV from breaking it down.

Mmm...smells like money to me though.

Use water or a bag of wet sand, you can pour it out when your done. You only need to damp the top lip.

Cracking and shrinking has been my experience with some of the undercoatings I've used. I guess those must be asphalt based............ and come to think of it the asphalt fence paint I used on a few parts (on my truck) cracked and shrank.

You aren't reading posts again.You must read between the lines and not the actual content ! I said I spoke to Phil Brennen,Bill Hanuschak that is where the Automotive undercoating/Sound Deadener came from,which I agreed with as that's what looks like are on my Owns not yours My Horns !!

Most people don't coat their horns in their living room.I myself work in a shop away from my home (Detached Garage) and if you read my post I said to use the stuff that will dry to the touch quickly and in day or two when dry (Inspection Required) now most Folks will paint them,maybe Altec Gray !!! So outgas by then will be a Non-Issue IMHO.

Do you have any projects going or do you just like to sit in judgment of others ? Heck do you even own any Altecs ?

It just occurred to me that you did the same thing awhile back about your 203B Horns that you were trying to sell.When I was quoting (Replying to Anthony/ Magnarc) about shipping and had nothing to do with you and you took it as I was talking about you.You know ASSUMPTIONS are the Mother of all (Insert Text Here).
